The JICP at a glance

Over the past three decades, the JICP has helped transform Johannesburg’s inner city through a unique people-first, partnership-driven approach. We focus on two core areas: Public Space Activation and Waste Management, creating clean, safe and welcoming streets for residents, workers, and visitors alike.

Signature initiatives include the Walkable Network, which connects transport hubs, employment clusters, and community spaces through safe, vibrant, green corridors; the internationally recognised Social Employment Fund (SEF), which has empowered over 6,000 residents through community-based work and enterprise; and SUNCASA, delivering nature-based urban resilience projects such as the Jukskei River Corridor activation.

Looking ahead, Joburg Fix Squad will train residents to maintain critical infrastructure, strengthening local capacity while creating a greener, more vibrant urban core.

For over 30 years, the Johannesburg Inner City Partnership (the JICP) has been working to transform the inner city into a clean, safe, welcoming and economically vibrant urban heart. An area where residents, workers, and visitors can thrive together.

Every project, every intervention, and every alliance is part of a coherent, systems-based strategy rather than a collection of ad-hoc fixes. By aligning public, private, and civic efforts along the Walkable Network, for example, the JICP maximises social, economic, and environmental impact.

A visionary spatial investment strategy linking key destinations — transport hubs, employment clusters, parks, and tourism destinations — through safe, green, and walkable streets. Anchored in placemaking and climate resilience.
