Our innovative and proven approach continues to deliver positive results. Alongside our partners, the JICP champions people-first, nature-based, investment friendly regeneration rooted in action, innovation, and integrity.
Here is a snapshot of the programmes and initiatives we are currently driving:
Walkable Network
A visionary spatial investment strategy linking key destinations — transport hubs, employment clusters, parks, and tourism destinations — through safe, green, and walkable streets. Anchored in placemaking and climate resilience.
Social Employment Fund (SEF)
Provides over 6,000 community-serving jobs, builds skills, and fosters local entrepreneurship while keeping streets clean, safe, and vibrant.
SUNCASA
Nature-based climate solutions delivering urban greening, river restoration, food gardens, and jobs. Over 23,000 trees planted to date.
Joburg Fix Squad
Trains residents to repair potholes, lights, and urban infrastructure, building capacity, safety, and opportunity.
JoburgLAB
JoburgLAB is an initiative founded by the Johannesburg Inner City Partnership and led by Thireshen Govender, Research Associate at the Graduate School of Architecture, University of Johannesburg.

Waste Management
Waste management is one of the JICP‘s two core focus areas. For the JICP, public space cleaning is not a peripheral service.
Informal waste reclaimers are central to South Africa’s recycling economy, yet they remain largely excluded from formal urban systems.
Activations
Public space activation is not limited to streets and parks. It also includes neglected ecological corridors that shape how communities experience the city.
Public space activation is one of the JICP’s two core focus areas, alongside waste management. While cleaning restores functionality, activation restores life.
Public space activation extends beyond parks and events. As part of its public space activation focus area, the Johannesburg Inner City Partnership (JICP) works to unlock local assets.
Sport is a powerful activation tool. As part of its public space activation focus area, the JICP uses structured sport programming to transform underused parks into spaces of opportunity, connection and safety.
Public space activation is not only about programming individual sites. It is also about making spatial strategy visible.
Public Employment
Johannesburg’s inner city remains a complex operating environment for when it comes to economic participation and sustainable livelihoods.
Cities are sustained by people. When employment collapses, urban systems weaken. When people are given structured opportunity, cities begin to stabilise.
Climate vulnerability and unemployment are deeply interconnected in Johannesburg’s inner city. Environmental degradation increases risk to already vulnerable communities, while limited employment restricts the capacity of residents to respond to those risks.
Partnerships
Johannesburg’s inner city is complex. Governance overlaps. Informal and formal systems operate side by side. Public space is contested. Decisions are fragmented. Yet people live here. Businesses operate here. Investment remains tied to its future.
