Johannesburg’s inner city is complex. Governance overlaps. Informal and formal systems operate side by side. Public space is contested. Decisions are fragmented. Yet people live here. Businesses operate here. Investment remains tied to its future.

The challenge is not a shortage of ideas. It is a shortage of coordinated action.

JoburgLAB, an initiative of the JICP, was created to strengthen partnership as a working tool — not a slogan. It brings public institutions, property owners, civic organisations, informal operators and investors into structured collaboration focused on solving practical urban problems.

Anchored on the Walkable Network, the JoburgLAB concentrates on real constraints that affect daily life: how spaces are managed, how risks are reduced, how informal and formal actors coexist, and how confidence in the inner city can be rebuilt.

Rather than launching large master plans, JoburgLAB works through small, deliberate experiments. It observes how the city actually functions. It identifies friction points. It tests adjustments. It refines what works. The emphasis is on learning by doing.

JoburgLAB exists to ensure that partnership itself becomes infrastructure — steady, practical and capable of carrying the weight of Johannesburg’s renewal.
